Anyone wishing to import live plants, or propagatable
material is advised to seek Import Permit advice
well in advance of any proposed shipping date
as, in some cases, extensive research will need
to be undertaken to assess the potential risks
associated with the entry of the plant (e.g.
to assess any possible affects in the Samoan
environment.)
Even after this extensive research permission
to enter cannot be guaranteed.
Entry conditions may also include a period of
"Post Entry Quarantine (PEQ)" time
in an approved secure environment. At the present
time there is only one approved PEQ site and
that is at the Ministry of Agriculture's Research
Facility at Nu'u.
Examples of some imported plants include; Orchids,
roses, carnations, palms.
are also capable
of carrying pests and diseases. As
a general rule small quantities (up to three
packets of same variety - or no more than 150
grammes) of garden seeds for home use do not
require a prior Permit to Import, however they
must still be declared,
by a Quarantine Officer on arrival - in some
cases seeds may be seized due to the risk of
introducing an exotic pest or alien weed species. All
other importations of seeds are prohibited entry
unless the Samoa Quarantine Service has issued
a prior permit. These permits may have some
pre-entry conditions attached, and in some cases
post-entry conditions as well.
Entry conditions are described within Import
Health Standards or can be sought via the Samoa
Quarantine Service contacts. Always
declare seeds carried, and if in doubt ask a
Quarantine Officer for advice. Some seeds may
be prohibited entry, and others may require
some sort of treatment or special inspection/examination/isolation
before entry can be allowed.
